Stiff Person Syndrome

Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare progressive movement disorder characterized by involuntary painful spasms and rigidity of muscles, usually involving the lower back and legs. Onset is usually noticed in people between the ages of 30 and 60. A structural MRI of the brain and spine is usually normal. The exact cause of classic SPS remains unknown but autoimmune mechanisms are suspected to play a role.
