Tardive Dyskinesia

Tardive Dyskinesia is a disorder that results in involuntary, repetitive tic-like movements , especially of the lower face. Tardive means "delayed" and dyskinesia means "abnormal movement." This neurological disorder frequently appears after long-term or high-dose use of antipsychotic drugs and is sometimes misdiagnosed as a mental illness. In children and infants it can present itself as a side effect of the usage of drugs for gastrointestinal disorders.

The best treatment for tardive dyskinesia appears to be prevention, either by lowering the dosage of a medication known to cause the condition or switching the patient to a different drug. We consider all available options and approaches when providing a treatment plan to a patient diagnosed with tardive dyskinesia.
